Notes for CHRISTINE MCCALL SCOLLON:
Per Melinda Totten Crowder:
Christine Scollon served her country in WWII in the Army Nurse Corps, 114th

Evacuation Hospital, overseas.

After her return to Barnesboro, PA,  after the war, I don't believe she ever spoke of her experiences.  She was highly nervous,
smoking one cigarette after the other, and very quiet.  After a few years she did get much better, and relate more to the family.  I
didn't know her too well, for we lived in Washington, D.C. for a while, then in Virginia and finally in North Carolina. (We: her nephew
John A. Totten, and wife Victoria Brannon Totten).

As far as I am concerned, she was as much  a hero as any soldier who ever lived.

__________________________________________________

14 July, 1943 – At approximately 00.30 and 03.30 hrs today, air raid alarms were sounded throughout the base. Enemy aircraft flew
over and dropped bombs in the vicinity of this station, however, no bombs actually dropped on our base. The medical detachment
assembled at the station hospital both times prepared for the emergency that night.

[14] The base was awakened early in the morning by the announcement of the first air raid alarm over the Tannoy. Some of the
personnel equipped themselves with gas masks and helmets and repaired to the shelters. A larger number got out of bed but spent
the time scanning the sky for things of interest. A few sluggards, probably lazier than brave, stayed under the covers.

There were two alarms, the first occurring shortly after midnight, and the second at a little after 0400 hours.

No bombs were dropped here.

The airdrome at Amiens-Glisy was the target for the day and 17 of the Group's Fortresses helped to bomb another German base out
of existence.

The Group's contingent, which made up part of the secondary effort for the operation, was led by Capt. Robert E. Post, of
Jamestown, N.Y. Visibility over the target was good and the crews reported that bombing results were "excellent". Clouds of smoke
were observed billowing from the airdrome and from what appeared to be a fuel dump.

Interrogation reports appeared to reveal that the enemy was massing forces in an attempt to protect its bases. Flak was said to be
the most intense yet encountered and there were apparently more fighters in the air the Group had ever met at one time before.

Claims for the operation totaled four destroyed and one probably destroyed.

Two of the Group's crews and planes were lost.

The ninth raid of the group took place this morning, destination being: Amiens-Glisy, France. One plane is Missing in Action.

day, Two were lost.  5 German fighters were shot down.  A complete listing of the crew and their home towns is listed in the War
Diary.

I have since aquired Jimmy's military papers on his death, burial and return home to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery in
1949.  I know Jimmy died when his B 17, the Widget, went down with his entire crew over Frace.  Jimmy was buried by the citizens
that lived in the area  where the bomber crashed in France July 14, 1943. Military papers show his first place of burial was on July
16, 1943 in an isolated grave located at: Gr I, Civ. Cem. Berck-su r-Mer, or Berck-Plage, France. Later he was reburied by the military
in France on July 12, 1945 at St-Andre. U.S. Military Cemetery, Plot G, Row 10, Grave 185 between two other members of his flight
crew.  His effects and identity was done by dental records and his flight vest with his name still intact on his body.  In 1949 he was
returned to the states at the request of his family, mother, father and brothers and sisters and buried in Arlington National
Cemetery.   His body arrived at Arlington August 1, 1949 along with sixty five other service men who had been KIA during WWII.
